Exit The King Review

Holy Schmoly What A Performance....
Exit The King Broadway Showlights

How many plays have been written about life and death?  Probably every play ever written. However this is probably the most absurd.  Geoffrey Rush puts on a genius performance.  If he does not win the Tony for Best Performance by a Leading Actor in a Play there is no justice in this world.  Exit the King is both a thinking persons play, and play that if you just want to watch and laugh, you can too.  Susan Sarandon was a little dissapointment until the last scene where she was very touching.  Just looked like she was holding back the whole time.  Something was off with her performance.  Lauren Ambrose was funny, cute, loving, hopeful, and full of life in a play mainly about dying.  She's sort of used to that theme, remember HBO's Six Feet Under?  Ephman really hopes to see more of her on Broadway in the years to come.  Can she sing and dance?  OH Andrea Martin how you let me down :(  Ephman's been a fan of yours since the SCTV days.  Seeing her play this character again and again and again was boring.  In a way it was just a ramped up version of Mojo from Days of the Week.  Please don't hate Ephman Andrea.  William Sadler who played the doctor, let's just leave it at "he was freaky".  A solid performance from him.  Brian Hutchison played the Guard.  Loved the way he was loyal and steadfast for his King.  His movements were great, and facial expressions showed the temperment of the play during the scenes.  See it before it's gone.  The stage was really simple, just a great tapestry and some 'royal' furniture.  The production was updated for today's crowd.  There were mentions of the Treasury's bailout of the financial institutions, the term "qwerty", and other modern inventions that Eugène Ionesco didn't write in the original play.  These additions were great, they made the audience laugh, and connected the themes better for a modern crowd, even if the play was first performed back in the early 1960's.   Ephman gives this play a 8 out of 10 overall.
