The Official ASUS Notebook Computer Review

If It Wasn't For Their Awful Customer Suppport Service They'd Have No Service At All
asus computer sucks notebook customer service

Here is why ASUS sucks with customer service, but read the whole article.  It'll put it all into context for you and hopefully save you from making a big mistake by buying an ASUS computer.

When Ephman was asked how he is doing, Ephman said "not so good", he got a laugh from the "supervisor".  Can you believe that she actually laughed?

Was told TWICE somebody would call me back with an answer.  Infact on the second time he was told 100% he would get a call, and she even double checked his phone number.  Do you really think he got that call?

Was told 3 times that the next day there would be answer the next day.  Never got that answer.

Was told that his machine will now go to the "good" repair center in California.  Wait did Ephman just hear what he thought he heard?  So the machine orignially went to the crappy repair center in Illinois?  What a joke.

And now for the BEST part.  2 different "supervisors" FINALLY got back to Ephman to tell him his expedited return has been approved!!!!  When he checked the FedEx tracking number GUESS WHAT???  They let Ephman down once again.  They sent the package out 3 business day.  Totally making him believe that ASUS are a group of imbeciles.

Ephman's been a big fan and customer of ASUS for well over 10 years now.  He started buying ASUS motherboards all the way back to his Pentium MMX days.  And for the most part never really had any major issues with their company when it came to single hardware components.  Until now.  In December 2008, he bought himself what seemed to be an amazing notebook on paper.  The ASUS M70vn is loaded even a year later:

  • Intel Core 2 Duo T9400 2.53G
  • 4 Gb RAM (2 sticks)
  • 17" WUXGA 1080p
  • NVIDIA GeForce 9650M GT 1024mb
  • 2 500 Gb Hard Drives
  • BlueRay Disc
  • HDTV Tuner & Antenna

Rockn' specs right?  Well the notebook about a month at home started having issue.  The screen had a couple busted pixels.  No worries couldn't really notice them unless you really looked for it.  Then strangly these squigly pencil looking lines stared showing up.  Again, now worries, unless you really look for them you can't see them.  Then Ephman noticed that when the screen was dark, about 1/3 of the panel was a light grey instead of black.  As if a flashlight was shining on it.  So Ephman figured upgrade the video driver.  So the great thing about nVIDIA is that they support Linux, and Ephman took the latest production driver and upgraded.  OUCH!!! the machine crashed like insanely crazy.  Screen started pixelating, blocks appeared, and then some image overlapping and CRASH.  Nice thing about Linux is that you can still repair a crashed out system from the command line.  See Ephman's a big video gamer, so he booted into the Micro$oft Vi$ta side and did the same thing.  Upgraded the driver to the latest Windoze driver, and the system crashed again.  So clearly we had a hardware problem.  2 different operating systems, different latest production drivers... and same results.  Logic says hardware.  OK so things started to annoy me at this point right?  Ephman called ASUS technical support, and they were totally awesome.  They said they'd take back my computer and repair it.

By the end of September begininng of October '09 he shipped if off.  They paid for the FedEX next day.  They recieved it "repaired" it and sent it back with a 3 business day FedEX return.  Hmmm they'll take the system back overnight but send it out with 3 business day?  No worries, Ephman was just glad to get back his computer.  Turned it on, restored his backups (cause Ephman sent them blank drives).  Right away he noticed the screen was replaced... sweet.  But about 5 minutes after he upgraded the nVIDIA drivers again in Linux... KABOOM!!!  Machine crashes.  Ouch!  So Ephman calls and tells them that the machine is not repaired properly.  They said the screen was replaced, and video card as well.  Now Ephman included with his notebook a well written letter explaining exactly how to recreate the crash, step by step.  Clearly their technical support person did the basic thing, and never tried Ephman's instructions.  Cleared off his desk and moved on to another machine.

Ephman figured at the least he's due an expedited overnight return of his notebook after it was repaired.  And not the 3 business day standard delivery.  The "supervisor" said that she had to ask for permission.  He was like "but you're a supervisor can you not just approve this?".  Supervisors at ASUS are useless.  See what probably happens is when somebody asks for a supervisor, the person is put on hold and the customer service rep screams "Who wants to play supervisor?".

In the meanwhile Ephman uninstalled the drivers and went back to the basic driver that doesn't really allow the power of the card to shine.  So for the next few days he called asking if and expedited return could be accomodated.  Finally someobdy told him that you need you return the machine before they can give an answer on an expedited return.  So the computer was sent in.  So everyday since Ephman got word from FedEX that the machine was recieved by them he's been calling to find out if they can expedite the return.  And every time (3 calls now), he's been told there is no answer.  See at this point it's not that he cares if the machine is returned with the 3 business day return.  He just wants an answer if they can approve his simple request.

AND on top of that right before Ephman sent out the computer he decided to run Memtest86+ to see if there are any faulty RAM sticks.  Came back positive with defective RAM.  Now that is totally something that would cause a serious system failure.  Why didn't they catch that when it was in their crappy repair center in the first place?

Wow ASUS you have done everything you possibly can to lose a long time customer for life.  Ephman will NEVER EVER purchase an ASUS computer or hardware component again.  Hopefully this blog post will save others from buying any ASUS products.

And all Ephman's ever wanted is a straight answer from ASUS on whether the computer will be returned with an expedited overnight shipping?  Yes or No.  What a joke.

asus netbook

two month old netbook. At first representative from Asus would gladly take care of problem but first try to solve where it was purchased. Best buys did not give a hoot gave the big song and dance routine about not purchasing an extended warranty on the merchandise which had a 1 year from the factory. then off I go back to Asus and they got really nasty
wants an e mail address to send back the piece of junk. how can you e mail when the computer is down and it is the only machine you have. also the back up of your info you cannot back up something when the computer does not work. what a joke no more asus products for me

my new ordeal....

so the other day the tv tuner in ephman's computer stopped working. he reinstalled the driver for whatever reason and it worked... cool. then it stopped working again. ok so he called asus and in their awesome wisdom their technical support moron told him to wipe his computer clean and reinstall the operating system. and that would "maybe" fix it. if not it didn't ephman has to send the computer in. he told them that it looked for the hardware in linux and it wasn't there as well so we're dealing with a hardware issue. and the rep said she didn't know what linux was. he had to explain linux to her. anyways long story short he's really reluctant on sending in the machine.

Worst support ever?

I'm not sure how your equate shipping 3 day ground instead of overnighting the pc to you as the worst customer service on the planet. Have you ever tried to resolve an issue with PayPal?

I can understand it gets really frustrating, but their jobs are to assume you are an idiot, take the machine and replace any bits they think are faulty, send it back and repeat if neccessary. When you try to force them to change their policies because you are upset, it usually doesn't go well.

The real trick for a consumer who knows how to diagnose computer problems is to either tell them what is wrong (if they will believe you) or elegantly give them a way to independently verify it. Sending a blank hard disk to them won't help a lot here. Assuming they will freak if you give them Linux (you know how much their 1st tier support guys make? a lot less than you and me!), give them the computer primed and ready to fail running Windoze.

I guess the bottom line is you have to be prepared to do the hard work for them and not give them crap for being a typical computer company. I've had worse experiences at both Dell and IBM for expensive servers and finally learned how to work with the system rather than try to fight it.

good luck

ASUS Sucks!

Ephman made it idiot proof for them.  Litterally.  He's also not equating 3 day shipping as the worst customer service.  The fact that his machine was in TWICE for the same issue, and they couldn't give him an answer, just an answer yes or no, on if they could approve the overnight shipping.  That's the issue.  Amongst a ton of other thing.

Dell is really bad too

I have been trying to cancel a Dell PC order that is in "production" mode which means the info has been sent to the assembly department. However, the final assembly wont be completed until 2 or 3 weeks. Trying to reach anyone at Dell that you can understand AND knwos what you want is pretty much impossible. Maybe Asus owns Dell or is it the other way around? ;)

ASUS Customer Service Is Terrible

Terrible customer service. They should go to school to learn how to treat customers. They also said one thing but did another to me. Totally not worth buying their computers.

UPDATE:

guess what? got 2 phone calls from ASUS. one from "supervisor" Lynn and another from equally useless Rodel Roque. both promised Ephman that his computer would be shipped back overnight. GUESS WHAT???? yep you guessed it once again ASUS custer service broke thier word. which now officially makes them the worst customer service on the planet. 3 business day shipping. they are so awful please do yourself a favor. never buy any ASUS computers or products. no matter how good the price is. JUST DON'T DO IT!!!!!!
