Shigurui: Death Frenzy... WTF Is Going On???

The Animation Is Awesome... The Story Is Not So Awesome...
shigurui anime animation japanese awful

Ephman takes care of his Netflix queue.  He scours the animation and anime genres for what seems to potentially be great anime films or series.  See he doesn't go on the boards to find out what's good and then rents it.  Nope Ephman just goes for it.  And this "go for" was Shiguru: Death Frenzy.

This series comes out of the mind of Takayuki Yamaguchi's magma series.  The TV series aired in mid-2007, but only got released in March '09.  Probably because the animation in this series was pretty amazing, but more on that a bit later.

Ephman thinks that right from the start of this series there were problems.  He was confused from the start.  See the first episode starts off with these 2 freakish looking samurai and they fight.  But it didn't make sense.  The characters sort of looked the same, and also kind of sounded the same too.  That made things just a bit worse.  Then we go back in time and this new kid shows up at the dojo, tries to kick some ass, etc...  basically gets an in to learn the Kogan style.  There's another series of fights, he moves his way up the food chain there, a serial killer shows up on the scene, somebody goes blind, another loses and arm, a girl gets hurt, etc... this all just sort of made Ephman's head spin a bit.

Aside from the hard to follow story, the animation was bordering on genius.  That's what kept him watching the complete series.  It was so graphic.  Somebody gets cracked one in the jaw and you see the event from the inside of the victims mouth.  All the teeth moving in slow mo breaking and crashing around.  There were these xray kind of quick shots before people were killed that was really cool.  And of course the blood was great, the way it sprayed all over the place from a sword swipe.

But really overall the series seemed a bit lacking...  If ever the next set of magma issues are turned into an anime Ephman would still watch them.  The animation was that good!  Anyways you'll get the idea of how great the animation is by this "commercial" for the box set.  Oh totally forgot to mention, the music is really good.  Ephman guesses that these tunes are pretty close to what was popular back in the day.
