Anvil! The Story of Anvil is just one of those fine underdog stories. MIght be one of the best. Anvil's Metal on Metal album could arguably be the most influential heavy metal album of all time. Anvil was formed in the Downsview area of Toronto by Steve "Lips" Kudlow (leader of the band, lead singer, lead guitar), and Robb Reiner (drummer extraordinaire, and no relation to Meathead). These two guys are basically brothers. And probably hold the record for banging their heads against a wall and not getting anywhere. It's a shame. Slash, Lemmy, & Lars (heavy metal god's), all say in the documentary that Anvil was the band everybody looked at in the 80's. But what happened? Why have they spent the last 20+ years making music and never getting out of playing their own birthday's, wedding's, and bar mitzvah's? Why has everything just gone so wrong for the most influential heavy metal band? Well this documenty tells ya. So many other reviews say they are the living version of SpinalTap, but they're not. They are two guys that live, eat, and breath heavy metal. Lips is just this totally lovable fellow, and Reiner is the solid rock, and put them together and you just can't help but want to see them play to more then 20 people, you want to see them get paid for their gigs, and you just want to see them cut their 13 album. Hopefully this documentary gets nominated for Best Documentary for the Oscars, and wins. But what this story is most about is karma. This film would never have been made if not for Sacha Gervasi (The Terminal). He was a very young teenager, while the band was on tour in England in the 80's and showed them around town. Fast forward 20 years later, and he's a major screenwriter. Tada, a recipe for what goes around comes around. On the Ephman meter this film gets a 8.75. See it!
